Black Currant

Grows as smaller shrub with spring flowers bearing summer fruits.  The glossy black berries are eaten fresh, used for juice / wine / spirits, and due to high pectin content, makes excellent jams and jellies.  High vitamin C content likely contributes to its use in traditional medicine.  Should be pruned yearly to remove older branches to allow younger productive shoots to grow.


Red Currant

Ribes rubrum

USDA Hardiness Zone 3-7

Perennial shrub with low growth habit.  Spring flowers bring red summer berries that are slightly more tart that their black currant cousins with equivalent sweetness.  High in Vitamin C and pectin the berries make excellent jams and jellies are great eaten fresh too.  

Older unproductive growth should be pruned yearly to maintain yield.
