Nanking Cherry

Prunus tomentosa

USDA Hardiness Zone 2-8

Nanking Cherry is a very cold hardy variety of bush cherry that bears surprising quantities of small sweet/tart cherries., ripening in June.  It tolerates most soil conditions excepting "wet feet" but prefers an alkaline soil.  It is drought tolerant and very well suited to arid mountain climates.

Nanking is an early bloomer in the spring, but unlike a lot of other early blooming fruits, its blossoms can tolerate frost and are not likely to lose a season's crop to a late cold spell.  Tolerates part shade but will do best in full sun.  Supposedly self pollinating, but anecdotal evidence supports the notion that single plants don't yield as well group plantings.
