Berggarten sage is a premium culinary sage. Harvest the aromatic leaves from new growth, avoiding older more woody stems. Harvesting or pruning these older stems stresses the plant and should be avoided. Instead focus on the first few inches of new growth. Tolerates alkaline conditions well, but will not tolerate a location with soggy winter conditions. Ours overwinters well in a large "smart pot".
Salvia officinalis ‘Purpurea’
USDA Hardiness Zone 4-10
Purple sage has all the aromatic grace of other culinary sages with the added benefit of its unique purple coloring. Use it to bring interest to edible landscapes and bring color to an otherwise drab herb garden.
